Critical Care Unit


Unit description
Our Critical Care Unit has 14 bed multidisciplinary beds, meaning that we admit and consult on all patients from Mount Sinai Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital who require critical care services. We function as a "closed" unit, meaning that the critical care team is primarily and solely responsible for patient care provided in the unit.

Our patient coverage includes:
  • medicine
  • general surgery
  • orthopedic surgery
  • obstetrics and gynecology (including high-risk)
  • cardiology (if ventilated)
  • otolaryngology
  • psychiatry
  • hematology/oncology (including bone marrow transplant)
  • vascular surgery
  • interventional radiology
Our areas of special expertise include:
  • advanced management of acute respiratory distress syndrome using high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) and nitric oxide (NO)
  • research in sedation and analgesia
  • use of technology at the bedside for improved patient care and provider education
  • high-fidelity simulation for learning and evaluation
