Mount Sinai Hospital
Critical Care Unit

Description of elective rotations for medical students
Given the complex nature of clinical problems in the critical care unit, only fourth-year medical students are allowed to participate in clinical electives in our unit. The elective must be a minimum of three weeks duration. Medical students will be assigned a small number of patients to review on a daily basis, under supervision of a resident. Elective students will be taught to develop an organized approach to caring for patients with multiple, complex problems. Training in procedures (e.g., central venous catheter placement, arterial line placement, chest tube insertion, endotracheal intubation) will be provided using models in the Surgical Skills Centre, and later on patients under direct supervision of an attending physician or fellow.

All elective medical students must be officially registered through the Electives office at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.

We welcome medical students from sites across Canada and from around the world. We only accept one student at a time to optimize the educational experience.

If you are interested in joining us for an elective, please e-mail Jill Lauterbach, Administrative Assistant (jlauterbach@mtsinai.on.ca) with the following information:
